Police warn against leaving cars unattended to defrost after spate of thefts

1 month ago 18

Drivers are being warned of the dangers of leaving cars unattended to defrost after a spate of alleged thefts in the ACT.

Earlier this month, CCTV footage showed a man driving a Honda Civic that had been reported stolen while it was left for the frost to melt (defrosting) earlier that morning.

On a different occasion, the man allegedly drove a black BMW, that had also been reported stolen while heating up in a driveway, to a house at Bonner.

The home was broken into and a black bag was stolen, ACT Police said.

The registration plates matched those stolen from a Toyota at suburban Mawson on August 2.

The man was arrested and will face the ACT Magistrates Court on charges including burglary, driving a motor vehicle without consent and driving while disqualified.

“Ice-scrapers are an inexpensive way to quickly and safely clear frost from your vehicle,” police said.

“A blanket can also be used to cover your windscreen to prevent ice forming.

“Alternatively, you can pour lukewarm (never boiling) water over the frozen parts of your vehicle.”
