Video: Speeding car takes out petrol bowser

Dramatic footage has been released showing the moment a speeding car ploughed into a Queensland service station, taking out a petrol bowser.

A drunk driver ran a red light in the early hours of December 19 at Slacks Creek, south of Brisbane.

He crashed his car into another vehicle, before it careened at speed as it crashed into the bowser.

Queensland police have released CCTV from the service station that shows the car becoming airborne and then smashing into pieces amid a shower of sparks.

Bodycam footage also shows officers speaking to a group of men after, when one of them says he caused the crash.

When asked why, he can be seen saying “coz (sic) I was drinking”.

The 32-year-old from Kingston recorded a blood alcohol limit of 0.225, almost five times the legal limit.

He recently pleaded guilty to charges of driving unlicensed and dangerous operation of a vehicle whilst adversely affected by an intoxicated substance.

The Kingston man was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.

He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Acting Sergeant Emma Wardlaw, who was there on the night, said it was unbelievable nobody was seriously injured or killed.

“The consequences of drink driving can be catastrophic and it is by sheer luck no one was seriously injured or killed as a result of this crash,” she said.

“I’ve seen many drink drivers involved in traffic crashes and sadly quite often it is innocent motorists who have suffered as a result.

“The message is clear: if you are going to be drinking, do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle and put everyone at risk.”
